Branding with Sounds: Kadasa Intellectual Property registered the first Sound mark in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates for Saudi Telecom Company (STC).

Representing its client STC, Kadasa Intellectual Property registered first ever Sound Mark in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Sound Mark is accepted in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in accordance with the GCC Trademark Law which has been implemented by Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

UAE is yet to implement the GCC Trademark Law however the UAE current Trademark law has a provision over Sound Marks. In accordance with the conditions in the UAE Trademark Law, the Sound Mark was accepted and registered.

Sound Marks are non-traditional forms of trademark and in future we can expect increasing trend in its adoption. Due to lack of international regulation and instrument of harmonization, the practice over Sound Marks varies from one region to another.

Sound Marks are not necessarily musical jingles. It may be any distinctive aural sound which is not commonly associated with the type of goods and services it is used with. Slogans commonly used in advertisements may also qualify as trademarks.
