The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) approves the registration of family names as trademarks

The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) decision to approve the registration of family names as trademarks has been published in the official gazette today 27th of September 2020 with immediate effect and it includes the specific rules and standards for accepting family names as trademarks, the most important of which are:
1- The family name must meet the statutory registration requirements of trademarks.
2- The applicant must have the same family name.
3- The family name in the trademark should be an extension of an existing business for at least ten years.
4- The family name should have a distinctive representation.
5- The family name should be a component of the mark, not the mark itself.
6- The registration of the family name as a mark must be in the same class of goods or services that the applicant is known for.
